DA Ward Councillors Rick Crouch (Ward 10) and Tim Brauteseth (Ward 18) are organising a prayer vigil and protest action against the heavy vehicles using Fields Hill.
There will be a peaceful and respectful prayer vigil and ceremony starting at the scene of the accident, followed by a peaceful protest against heavy duty trucks on Fields Hill.
Pending Metro Police approval, there will also be a march from the Pinecrest Shopping Centre, with the plan to conglomerate at 8:30am in the free Pinecrest parking area, opposite the Lahee Park Swimming Pool. The march to the accident scene will start at 9am.
Marchers will be issued with black armbands and protest banners. Please feel free to make banners that pertain specifically to the banning of heavy duty vehicles from Fields Hill. Political banners will not be allowed, as this is a community action.
If you want to join the march, you can park at Pinecrest Shopping Centre, Lahee Park Swimming Pool or at the Lahee Park Rugby Club. There are plenty of parking spaces in Kirk Road, off Josiah Gumede (Old Main) for those not wishing to participate.
Should you wish to contribute to the Fields Hill Accident Fund, which provides assistance to the families and survivors, please bring non-perishable foodstuffs for collection and distribution.
The vigil / protest action will take place on Saturday 14 September at 09:30am, at the site of the recent accident in which 27 people were killed (M13 off ramp and Richmond Road intersection).
