Powerful images to support the weak and vulnerable
The ambience at Durban’s Pencil Club on Umhlanga Ridge on the evening of July 7 promises to be culturally vibrant. Durban documentary photographer, artist and author, Matthew Willman, will be showing some of his fine art photographic work and sharing insights on his extensive global travels. The works will be on sale to the attendees at the select event.
The artist has generously offered to donate a percentage of sales to The Domino Foundation, an NPO which has been impacting the lives of marginalised members of the community for the past 18 years. “As a visually-inspired person, I have been moved by the images coming out of the recent floods in Durban. I have known of The Domino Foundation’s work to alleviate the suffering of so many in Ethekwini’s communities whose lives have been devastated by this disaster, through its seven programmes. It is my great pleasure to be able to be part of the effort to help.”
Also on sale will be Matthew’s books, one of which, “We called him Madiba”, came out of his decade as a commissioned photographer to Nelson Mandela as part of the building of the Mandela Centre of Memory’s visual library. As July each year sees the nation celebrate the great South African’s life and legacy, the evening will, in part, contribute to this year’s commemoration.
