Situated in the heart of uMhlanga, Create Ceramics aims to provide a truly one-of-a-kind experience – and they have certainly succeeded in doing that! Sarah Mackintosh shares her experience…
I recently went to experience Create Ceramics with my son, Oliver. All I can say is WOW – what a great experience! From the service to the coffee and food to the actual ceramics painting – the whole experience was fantastic.
When you arrive, your waiter covers the table in protective paper (which you will need) – and then they explain and demonstrate the different painting techniques used for ceramics. Once you have learnt the basics, you are free to browse their extensive range of ceramics and choose the one you would like to paint. The range of ceramic art pieces includes teapots, bunnies, skulls, plates, butter dishes, vases and loads more. They also have a large range of paints and brushes and other tools for you to use when you paint, and if you get stuck, the friendly staff are on hand to help you every step of the way.
The best part is that we never felt rushed, and we just took our time and had such fun painting our plates. I must admit, we took much longer than we should have to paint two side plates – but it was more about the experience.
Once you have finished painting your piece, they take it away to be baked – you won’t get it back the same day, but they contact you when it is ready to be collected.
We had arrived in the morning, intending to just have a coffee, but stayed so long we ended up having lunch! The food was delicious, the portions generous, and the prices reasonable.
All in all, it was a wonderful experience and I would love to go back with the whole family, or even with a group of friends. It’s a relaxing, creative way to spend time together and have a few laughs with a coffee (or a wine)!
They also host special occasions and events like corporate team building, kitchen teas, baby showers, birthday parties, book clubs, and more. Reservations are essential.
Create Ceramics is situated at 16 Chartwell Drive, Granada Square, Umhlanga, and they are open Monday to Sunday, 9am to 5pm.
