Epworth High School for Girls, located in Pietermaritzburg, boasts a long and proud tradition – 124 years – of providing a holistic education to girls (boarders and day scholars) from Grades 8 to 12.
Our school, and all its activities, is firmly guided by our motto of Fida (Faith) Humana (Compassion) Fortis (Courage) and our moral compass is set by the spiritual qualities embedded in our Christian faith. Authenticity is central to all our pursuits, and we strive to promote an ethos of “true to who we are”. We encourage our pupils to aim at personal excellence, focusing on realising their individual potential. For us, success is seeing our pupils working diligently to outperform their personal goals, being the best they can be.
We are particularly proud of our picturesque, 15-hectare park-like campus with its unique Art Deco-inspired architecture that is surrounded by expansive lawns and large trees. Our top-class facilities reflect our investment in and commitment to education excellence.
We are a leader in innovative teaching methodologies and our academic programme comprises an extensive range of subjects accommodating pupils with wide-ranging abilities and interests. We follow the Independent Examination Board (IEB) syllabus and consistently achieve 100% pass rate in the IEB Senior Certificate Examinations. Our classroom learning extends to navigating complex contemporary challenges facing young people today, e.g. racism, sexism.
Sport is an integral part of school life, and we cater equally for the elite and recreational sportswoman. Our success at regional and national level is testament to our prowess on the sports field.
The performing arts are an indispensable part of any well-rounded education. Music, dance and drama feature prominently at Epworth and every pupil has the opportunity to explore her creative potential through these art forms.
Community engagement is embedded in the culture of Epworth and throughout the year, pupils engage in various charitable projects on and off the campus, which benefit and enrich the lives of others.
Our boarding establishment, which caters for termly and weekly boarders, is home-from-home to about half of our pupil body. Our comfortable facilities, caring staff and support structures ensure our boarders’ physical, academic and emotional needs are met.
“A balance of tradition with contemporary layers ensure that our pupils are challenged and nurtured to develop a love of growth and learning. Our pupils are confident, ethical leaders with a strong sense of belonging,” says Principal of the High School, Mrs Tracey Munro.
