It is exciting times for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Durban Branch, as the 55-year-old NGO relocates its operations to a 7.7ha property in Hammarsdale. The League will continue its established duties while reaching new communities.
The Animal Anti-Cruelty League, Durban Branch was founded by Joyce Northend, together with a small handful of volunteers with a mere 8 shillings and sixpence in 1956, primarily to sterilise domestic animals.
The League is now ready to take its next giant step. By purchasing a farm in the Hammarsdale area, with all its inherent growth potential, it will reach yet another milestone in its expansive dedication to animal welfare in the KZN region. This will allow the League to reach communities including Shongweni, Inchanga, Hammarsdale, Elangeni, Georgetown and Mpumalanga, treating their pets and problematic animals that pose threats of disease.
Further fundraising opportunities will be developed, from dog and cat boarding kennels to a charity shop and tea garden, animal farm, horse stabling and plant nursery assisted by savings on veterinary clinic costs by the inclusion of an in-house satellite clinic.
In addition, these areas will benefit from the highly successful AACL educational industrial theatre road show, which successfully reached 5 000 pre-primary learners during 2011. The road show illustrates the five recognised basic needs of animals, dispelling age-old abusive traditions, and the ongoing care of healthy animals, all in a fun and interactive presentation.
Sincere thanks and appreciation are extended to the League’s constant and loyal supporters, who have travelled the long and windy road side by side with the League to this point.
All proceeding to plan, it is envisaged that the initial move from 208 Blackburn Road to the Artesia Well Farm in Leckhampton Valley, Hammarsdale, will take place during May of 2012 with the Cat Haven in 175 Station Ridge Road following shortly thereafter.
