November 23, 2010. International superstar AR Rahman will make history as the first artist to perform in a Fifa Stadium post the 2010 World Cup when his world tour comes to Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on November 26.
Rahman’s “Jai Ho Concert: The Journey Home World Tour” has travelled to more than 20 major arenas and cities worldwide, but the nationwide tour to South Africa from November 20 to 26 will do more than just celebrate history, it will also be making it at the time of the “150 Years Celebration of the first Indian in South Africa”.
Stardom
Already an acclaimed musician and composer, Rahman shot to stardom last year with his work on the film score for Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire winning a Golden Globe, two Academy Awards and most recently two Grammys.

The material on show will span through Rahman’s prolific career, including songs from Slumdog Millionaire plus landmark Indian films Lagaan, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Dil Se, Rang De Basanti and Roja.

AR Rahman, full name Allah Rakha Rahman, is a film composer, record producer, musician and singer. His career in film began in the early 1990s. Rahman has won 14 Filmfare Awards, 11 Filmfare Awards South, four National Film Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, two Grammy Awards, and two Academy Awards.
Rahman obtained a degree in western classical music from the Trinity College of Music, London, and set up his own in-house studio called Panchathan Record-Inn at Chennai, arguably one of Asia’s most sophisticated and high-tech studios.

In a career spanning more than a decade, Rahman has sold more than 150 million records of his film scores and soundtracks worldwide, and sold more than 200 million cassettes, making him one of the world’s all-time top selling recording artists.

According to Wikipedia, his works are notable for integrating eastern classical music with electronic music sounds, new technology and traditional orchestral arrangements. In 2009, Time placed Rahman in its list of World’s Most Influential People.
Interesting facts:
In 1999, Rahman partnered with choreographers Shobhana and Prabhu Deva Sundaram and a Tamil cinema dancing troupe to perform with Michael Jackson in Munich at his “Michael Jackson and Friends” concert.
In 2002, he composed the music for his maiden stage production, Bombay Dreams, commissioned by musical theatre composer Andrew Lloyd Webber.
Finnish folk music band Värttinä collaborated with Rahman to write the music for The Lord of the Rings theatre production. In 2004 Rahman composed the piece Raga’s Dance for Vanessa-Mae’s album Choreography.
Today Rahman is best known for his musical collaboration for the piece Jai Ho in the world-wide hit film Slumdog Millionaire.
