La Pizza Pazza is a hidden gem – the kind of place that people return to time and time again for the extensive menu, delicious Mediterranean dishes and warm hospitality… and all right in the centre of Kloof.
Seven years ago, owners Pete and Allison Nairn swapped farming for the restaurant business, using years of experience entertaining at home to create a family-style trattoria that reflects their personal charm. “We wanted to create a place to wine and dine in an intimate environment, where you feel completely at home,” says Pete.
We visited on a Tuesday evening and the place was buzzing with groups enjoying the great vibe, as well as locals there for their weekly visit. Everyone is welcomed like a friend, with attentive service from waiting staff and the owners.
Allison treats each meal as if it’s been made in her own kitchen … and you can tell. Everything is made from scratch, so don’t expect dinner in a flash. From more-ish calamari to risotto, thin-based wood-fired pizzas and other hearty Italian classics like veal, there’s something for everyone.
You’ll also find gluten-free options for pizza and pasta.
The team go to great lengths to source the best ingredients, including authentic mozzarella and fresh seafood.
Daily specials are seasonal and difficult to resist. One example, the Dijon fillet, is a meat-lover’s dream – succulent beef topped with a Dijon sauce, crispy bacon, feta and avocado. My husband was in heaven! And for dessert? Allison’s home-made crème brûlée and dark chocolate mousse, or a range of genuine Venetian ice-creams.
The wine list is carefully thought out, with a tipple for every occasion and all fairly priced. While you’re dining the Italian way, why not enjoy a Grappa or another aperitif of your choice? The bar is well-stocked and ripe for your enjoyment.
Above all, La Pizza Pazza is a place to sit back, relax and enjoy good company (with or without the kids). As the Italians say, “Salute!”
