It’s something many of us dread, but there are ways to reduce your chance of being targeted. Johann von Bargen, ECR’s ‘Traffic Guy’, has been at the forefront of the fight against hijackers for some time. He shares his wisdom.
Change your routine, where you can. Alternate your route to work, try different short-cuts, take a detour… Keeping would-be hijackers on their toes will halve your chance of being attacked.
Keep doors locked! It may seem simple, but this is such a clear giveaway and who do you think the would-be hijacker will go for: someone with their doors locked, windows rolled up, or someone whose arm is hanging casually out the open window?
Leave space between you and the vehicle ahead of you to ensure a slick escape in one forward manoeuvre. If you can see the bottom of their tyres on the road, that’s enough.
Keep moving. 97% of hijackings happen when a car is stationary. Be aware of your surroundings and time your drive so that you don’t get stuck at a red light – a prime target for criminals.
Practise reverse parking. You can only see one side when you’re looking over your shoulder, so park with your boot to a wall to ensure clear vision when you’re ready to leave.
Bear this in mind the next time you’re out driving. An aware driver has more time to get out of the way of trouble!
