Barefoot runners attempt to break record

By The Ridge Magazine28/03/20142 Mins Read

Grace Aid is celebrating the annual ‘One Day without Shoes’ campaign by attempting to break the Guinness World Record for the number of barefoot runners in a 100m race on Saturday April 5th at the Kings Park outer fields.

Registration is at 9am with the race commencing at 10am. Durban’s eThekwini Municipality via Imagine Durban are partnering in this exciting event.

One Day Without Shoes is an annual celebration that takes place this year on 29th April 2014, where we take off our shoes to raise awareness for children’s health and education. Imagine a school day – sports, stairs, roads, sidewalks and even bathrooms – all barefoot. Our KZN kids know about this all too well and Grace Aid wants to change that!

Entrance to the race is free, Grace Aid are just asking that people donate a new pair of children’s shoes if they’d like.

“It’s just 100 metres and you don’t even have to run fast – a leisurely jog will do!” says Grace Aid Director, Dave Richter. “The current record is 529. We’re aiming at a 1000 people, so bring everyone you know with feet!”

The shoes will be distributed to projects who serve disadvantaged children.

Actor / comedian Aaron McIlroy will be hosting and running barefoot. There will be a festive vibe with live music and a post-race picnic (bring your own picnic or food – drinks will be on sale). All are welcome, so bring your friends and take off your shoes to change the road ahead for our kids.

The event takes place at the Kings Park outer fields on Saturday 5th April with the race getting underway at 10am.

Make it known if you are attending by joining the event on Facebook and share this event with your friends.

More information is available on the Grace Aid website www.graceaid.org.
