It takes a certain brave individual to compete in the Durban July’s notorious 13th race every year. That’s because you’ll find neither horses, nor riders in the mad dash to this finish line.
Only men… and their bare necessities on display. In this atmosphere of cheeky fun, Bear Underwear decided to pull their own stunt.
A team of Bear runners competed in the dash, proudly displaying a banner that read: “Ditch the Jockeys, Go Bear”.

Their mission: to show off Bear underwear in full flight, to equip the other naked finishers with the Bear Necessities, and in the spirit of good-natured competitiveness, to sneak a pot-shot at a rival underwear brand (whose name also happens to describe a racehorse-rider).
Bear Brand Manager, Anisa Naidoo weighed in on the action: “We’re a trendy, fashionable brand and we’re up for a little fun, as are our consumers. A Bear Man knows that underwear is an accessory, not a necessity, and he wears his Bear underwear proudly … even in the 13th race.”
