The semi-final between the Sharks and Bulls at Durban’s Absa Stadium on Saturday afternoon was delayed by a swarm of bees. For the record, the final score was Sharks 16-Bulls 12.
Confused players stood around for many minutes as the mysterious swarm of bees buzzed around before the players were withdrawn from the field. Television presenters attempted to go about business as usual but many thousands of bees refused to leave the playing area.

Fans looked on in confusion as the bizarre natural phenomenon halted the much anticipated Currie Cup semi-final between old rivals the Sharks and Bulls.

The bees seemed to be swarming around a flagpole around the halfway line. Sharks coach John Plumtree grinned and told SuperSport presenter Darren Scott it was one of the strangest phenomenons he’d ever experienced.
The organisers eventually put plants down near the pitch to try to attract the bees and get them away from the playing surface. Other tactics included using leaf blowers, fire extinguishers and red flares to try to get the unwanted visitors to buzz off.
Finally the bees were brought under control and the Currie Cup semi-final got under way.
