Durban is changing…we have always had a tradition of wonderful actors and a rich cultural heritage, but the arts have traditionally taken a backseat to sports.
Now however, our place as the poor relation is reversing rapidly. Cabaret, which I watched in awe last year at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre, is now continuing its run at Montecasino. What a triumph! To start in Durbs and progress to Jo’burg and Cape Town.
Tonight at the Seabrooke’s Theatre at Durban High School the Broadway and West End hit, The Compleat Wrks of Wllm Shkspr, arrives in our midst with a distinctly South African twist. If you love Shakespeare, go along. If you hate Shakespeare, be amazed and laugh till you cry. It is brilliant. I watched this in London and I promise you won’t be disappointed. Directed by Peter Court it runs until the 23 June, and every moment is brilliant.
This Christmas we have the full Beauty and the Beast to look forward to – not the Disney version, the West End amazing full stage at the Elizabeth Sneddon version! Directed by Steven Stead and Greg King, tickets are already on sale at Computicket. Buy some, when the productions come to our beautiful town, support them and they’ll come back.
