Umhlanga’s Jessica Yallup survived some scary moments but made it through to the final 8.
Although she had to face the horrible news that both 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s Darren “Whackhead” Simpson and Tim Thabethe of OFM in Bloemfontein thought her days were numbered, the gutsy redhead escaped being included in the final group of three who had to sweat it out before hearing who would be dumped from the competition.
The unfortunate Bongi of Thembisa in Johannesburg received the least number of votes and was sent packing, after he and Pieter West were the last two waiting to face the music.
There would be no last-ditch celebration for Bongi, who failed in his final lifeline – his attempt to win over the judges when he sang a high energy version of the Kool & the Gang hit song “Celebration”.
In the build-up to the announcement of the voting results it was revealed that Charlton Tobias’s listeners at Algoa Stereo in Port Elizabeth thought Pieter West would have the fewest votes, and East Coast Radio’s Abi Ray thought Durbanite Lloyd Cele would be singing the blues.
But at the end of the day the voters spoke, so no joy on season 6 of Idols for the dreadlocked Bongi, while for Jess the dream continues.
