June 10, 2011. Close to 400 tough riders donning their cycling tights and helmets arrived ready to take on the Cane 2 Coast mountain biking challenge on the north coast last weekend.
The warm Ballito morning saw riders eagerly gathering at the Cane & Spoke mountain bike playground to begin what would be the most scenic North Coast cycling race of the year!
Jointly hosted by Cane & Spoke, the Ballito Prawn & Jazz Festival, and the eLan Property Group, the Cane 2 Coast event offered the opportunity to see the North Coast’s diverse landscape up close (with a few tumbles thrown in). The track coursed through natural bush trails, forest paths, cane lands, and the sandy beach of eLan’s Blythedale Coastal Resort.

When the starting gun sounded, it didn’t matter whether you were seriously competing in the 40km race, or one of the plonkers just having a fun day out, or with your kiddies in the 6km fun event, everyone was ready to make tracks (with the occasional walk, of course). And coming out on top in the timed races were:
- 40km – Sean Merredew (Men’s) with a time of 01:18:56
- 40km – Tammy Visagie (Women’s) with a time of 01:46:37
- 25km – Bradley Stevens (Men’s) with a time of 01:09:09
- 25km – Cindene Smith (Women’s) with a time of 01:24:57
The day was wrapped up with old fashioned fun on the Cane & Spoke farm with live music, face painting and a jumping castle. The competitors were able to catch up after the race, analyse any “war” wounds, and plan their tactics for next year’s race!
