Gateway Theatre of shopping in Umhlanga hosted the annual CANSA Shavathon in the FEC court (outside the Movies). The event was held from 9am and hundreds of shoppers and CANSA supporters pitched up to do their part in the fight against cancer. Each person who volunteered to have their head shaved or coloured donated R50 to the fight against cancer.

CANSA Shavathon is one of South Africa’s most compelling citizen events and has the full support of the broadest range of South Africans imaginable. Ordinary citizens, representing every social grouping in the nation (and all age categories), have embraced the event with enthusiasm as it provides them with a symbolic way of showing their solidarity with cancer survivors and helps in the battle against this destructive disease.

This year the sum of more than R25 000 was collected from Gateway alone, with the event being well supported by both children and adults. The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) turns 80 years old this year and 2011 also marks the organisation’s eighth Shavathon event.
