Get ready for the Cave Rock Tube Masters, a specialty Tube Riding Event where surfers are scored on the biggest tubes ridden with the utmost commitment.
Some big names will be participating in the event, scheduled to take place on any one day between now and 31 August when the surf is 6-8ft and pumping.
Grant ‘Twiggy’ Baker, Sean Holmes, Casey Grant, Matt Bromley, Ryan Pane, Josh Redman, Frankie Oberholtzer, Brandon Jackson, Chad du Toit, Warren Dean, Phil Nel, and Tommy Kruger will pit their talent against Cave Rock locals including Rudi Palmboom Jnr. and Snr., Ryan and Karl Ribbink, Ross Solomon, Julian Wilson, and Scotty Venter in a bid to conquer the ‘holy grail of surfing,’ the tube ride.
“Cave Rock on its day is a really heavy, critical, world-class tube. With the combination of some very skilled and courageous local talent mixing it up with bona fide international names, I think we’re in for a real surfing treat, one that should appeal to purists and competitive followers alike,” says organiser and ardent surfer John McCarthy.
Cave Rock is a world-class reef break located between Ansteys and Brighton Beach on The Bluff. It is an incredibly dangerous and dramatic wave due to the combination of a shallow reef and raw powerful swells.
First prize in the event is a ticket to Hawaii, while the second placed surfer will go on a surf safari with Bink surftours to Mozambique.
There are also prizes for the single greatest Tube Ride of the day, the winner of which will receive a Nixon Capital Automatic valued at R11 000, and for the ten most stylish Tube exits, which will see the winners collect a pair of Von Zipper Sunglasses of their choice.
The Cave Rock Tube Masters is sanctioned by Surfing South Africa and supported by the City of Durban.
