The Collect-a-Can National Schools Competition teaches learners a valuable lesson in recycling and taking care of the environment while providing schools with an exciting opportunity to raise additional funds for their school.
Schools that register for the Collect-a-Can National Schools Competition are encouraged to get their learners involved by collecting as many cans as possible to win great prizes. Prizes are awarded to the schools that collect the most cans per month as well as the most cans per year.
Durban schools were rewarded for their contributions with big prizes at the schools prize giving event at the end of last year for collecting the most cans in their category in the Durban region.
First prize winners, in both categories for larger and smaller schools, bagged themselves R25 000 each. Category 1 first prize winners, Lindelani Primary School, managed to collect a total of 196 947 cans over the duration of last year while Category 2 first prize winners, The Birches Children’s Centre, collected 3 867 cans per learner during last year.
Second and third place winners were also rewarded for their greening contribution; second prize won themselves R 15 000 in cash, while third prize winners received R10 000 each. Category 1 second prize winners, Mthethomusha SP School, collected 169 600 cans while Category 1 third prize winners, Sibongamandla Primary School, collected a total of 160 640 cans during the competition.
Category 2 second prize winners, Peter Nasorg, managed to collect 2 501 per learner and Category 2 third prize winners, Kloof SP School, collected 620 cans per learner.
“Our winning schools are truly an example to all other schools to participate in this competition. This competition provides a great opportunity for schools to generate an extra income or to win big prizes while teaching the learners about a clean, green and healthy environment,” says Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manager at Collect-a-Can.
These winning schools would like to encourage other schools to start collecting cans today and enter the Collect-a-Can National Schools Competition this year to contribute what they can to help protect the environment – every recycled can counts.
