SUNBIRDS B&B in Southbroom is located just four minutes walk from the exquisite Umkobi beach, with views of the sea and regular sightings of dolphins and whales.
Owners Liz and Jonathan Shaw are details people and have put together four bedrooms that offer king-size beds, lovely bathrooms and individual exits, so you don’t have to go through the main house, unless you want to.
You’ll find yourself in good company here – Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connolly visited Sunbirds while they were in the area for the filming of Blood Diamond. An honesty bar and guest lounge are positioned to make the most of the view, while the pool area has sun-loungers aplenty and looks set for a day of relaxation.
Breakfast is a special affair, with no less than three indulgent courses. Liz delighted us with one of her surprise starters – a palate-pleasing pawpaw in honey and cinnamon served on a toasted croissant with Greek yogurt. Absolutely delicious!
The culinary theme continued with a visit to Trattoria La Terrazza for dinner. This is a top class restaurant, just a short walk down the road. It’s a rare delight not having to worry about who’s going to drive, made even better by the quality of faire on offer. The Tratt, as it’s known locally, exudes a modern colonial cool, with views over the lagoon and slick, friendly service. Highlights of the modern Mediterranean menu include fresh seafood, delicately flavoured salads and an exceptional fillet steak with red wine reduction and spinach purée.
