The Kloof and Highway SPCA together with Rescuetech volunteers, Daniel Stewart, a dedicated SPCA volunteer, and Andreas Mathios from Community News Network, were involved in the dramatic rescue of three baby goats that were trapped on a 40 meter high cliff face in KwaDebeka, Pinetown.

On Tuesday morning, 21 February 2017 the Kloof and Highway SPCA received a call from a very concerned member of the public about three baby goats that had first been seen on the cliff …face on Sunday, 19 February 2017. It was clear that they were obviously stuck and could not find their way down. Initially, a hydraulic lift from the Fire Brigade and Group Five, a local construction company, was used but the lift could not reach the bleating and panic stricken goats. A call was then made to Rescuetech for their assistance and they quickly responded.

The Rescuetech volunteers abseiled down from the top of the cliff to where the goats were stranded and then managed to secure the goats into a harness and used a belay rescue technique to slowly lower them down to safety. The dramatic rescue operation started mid-morning and continued late into the night and was made exceptionally difficult due to the persistent rainfall. A very special thank-you to all role players who worked throughout the day and well into the evening to rescue the three baby goats. The goats are safely in our care at the Kloof and Highway SPCA recovering from their harrowing and long ordeal.
