October 31, 2011. Construction teams are hard at work at the Ellis Brown Bridge, which spans the Umgeni River. It’s all part of a plan to widen the bridge by up to 3m, providing a safe passage for cyclists and walkers wishing to cross the river.
With the Umgeni precinct having developed into a sporting hub, and the impact of the “Green Hub” at the Umgeni estuary, the plan is to have a continuous cycling circuit, allowing cyclists from the north side to cross the Umgeni and access the Snell Parade, the city’s beaches and on to uShaka Marine World. Of course, they can go the other way in safety, too.

This will also bring into play the city’s much talked about broader promenades (the promenade was extensively widened in time for the 2010 Soccer World Cup).
