The awards keep coming to Hillcrest Private Hospital, this time to Nursing Sister Sue Meares for her dedication to patient care.
You may recognise nurse Sue Meares from our July/August 2014 issue, when we featured her as one of the accomplished “retired” nurses making a real difference at Hillcrest Private Hospital. Now, Sue’s hard work and commitment to her patients has been recognised with a Discovery Excellence Award.
The Discovery Excellence Award in Nursing celebrates the nurses that patients have identified as having played an important role during their stay in hospital. Not only has Sue received a Discovery Excellence Award in Nursing, but she has been identified as one of the top 10 nurses in private hospitals in South Africa.
“We are very proud of Sue and the fact that she has been recognised beyond Hillcrest Private Hospital,” says Nursing Manager June Stock. “She continues to excel and to make a difference with patients, who regularly commend her for her work ethic and attitude. All this despite the fact that Sue works part time! It’s these values that we want to instil in our younger nurses to ensure that our patients receive the very best care.”

“It’s all about listening and caring,” says Sue, “and having a sense of humour doesn’t hurt. I enjoy the contact with people and the variety that nursing brings. I’m active and enthusiastic and, although working in the Short Stay ward is physically demanding, I love what I do.”
Sue has made a significant contribution to ensuring that communication between the hospital and patients is clear and consistent, from pre-admission to discharge. “It sets our patients’ minds at ease when they are kept informed at all times, and is a particular help to parents,” she explains.
“We’re blessed to work in such a beautiful hospital, with good teams, top-quality equipment and supportive management. I am grateful to have been nominated for this award, but know that there are lots of people behind the scenes who also work hard, but don’t always get the recognition.”
