Students from the Interior Design course at Style Design College transformed the girls’ hostel lounge at The Fulton School for the Deaf, creating an inviting area for staff and scholars.
The revamp was headed up by lecturer Nicky Day and was handed out to first year students of Interior Design at Style Design College. The brief was open but the space was defined – the students were given a 20 sqm space at Fulton school and their task was to revamp and redesign the Girls’ hostel lounge area, as well as the foyer area leading to the hostel rooms.
The area had not received attention for quite some time and, as the school despends on sponsorships from the public, this area seemed rather neglected. The students brief was to include the colour blue into the space, provide seating for the 14 girls that reside there during the week, as well as make it more comfortable for its users.
The seven students whose designs were selected were: Kendra Karagornas, Meghan Van Rooyen, Michaella Menin, Kristen Pretorius, Gemma Slabbert, Samantha Acutt (Foyer area), Lauren Lovell (Foyer area).
The main design scheme that was chosen worked around the concept of birds and freedom, and materials were selected to relate to this concept.
