Primary School Urban Gardens project showcases ingenuity and sustainability at East Coast Radio House & Garden Show.
“Gardens are not made by singing ‘Oh, how beautiful!’ and sitting in the shade,” once said Rudyard Kipling. So Mr Kipling would likely have appreciated the Urban Gardens project by Verigreen, in partnership with the ECR House & Garden Show and MSQ Interiors, which demonstrates what wonders hard work and ingenuity can produce.
Verigreen has been at the forefront of sustainable manufacturing in KZN for 15 years, and their Urban Gardens initiative aims to raise awareness about environmental issues among those who will inherit the earth: our children. Four Durban schools – Maris Stella, St Mary’s, Durban Preparatory School, and Chelsea Preparatory School – have joined the project, conceptualised by Michelle Markram from MSQ Interiors, which invites students to build urban gardens using waste products.
The most innovative gardens can be seen at the ECR House & Garden Show, and visitors are invited to vote for their favourite. The one with the most votes wins a R5 000 cash prize for their school! Voting takes place via the Supa Mama Facebook page @SupaMamaTM, starting 30 June and ending 5pm 9 July. After the show, the gardens will be donated by the Supa Mama team to deserving families within their local communities.
