Responding to Vavi’s criticism after Kunene held a lavish party at a Sandton restaurant – at an estimated cost of about R700 000 – Kunene told the Cosatu leader he was merely jealous. He also said Vavi was incorrect, the party had in fact cost more than R700 000.
He told Vavi he could “go to hell”. He also taunted Vavi, saying that he (Kunene) was a self-made man, who does “not hide behind his wife’s businesses”, like Vavi.
The Cosatu General Secretary had slated Kunene’s luxurious lifestyle at a conference in Boksburg on Wednesday, referring specifically to the party Kunene held to celebrate his 40th birthday.
At the party sushi was served off the bodies of scantily clad young women. ANC top brass including youth league leader Julius Malema and presidential spokesman Zizi Kodwa were among the guests.
Vavi accused the country’s powerful business and political elite of a “corrupt morality”. “It is this spitting in the face of the poor and insulting their integrity that makes me sick,” said Vavi.
