Having a themed birthday party can be so much fun. Yes, there’s a lot of advance preparation, work and effort, but the joy and happiness it brings, as well as the memories, are priceless.
Benjamin is crazy about fishing, so what better way to celebrate his sixth birthday than in the Midlands with family and friends enjoying the crisp air and doing what he loves best – trout fishing.
The set-up
Set up near the dam was a host of fishing paraphernalia – antique bamboo fishing rod and old copper fish moulds which had been found in a second-hand shop; beautiful fly-fishing flies borrowed from a friend; tartan camping items and flasks; a large picnic basket filled with boxes of foodie treats; and an assortment of things displayed in various boxes and baskets so that the kids could grab them between fishing.
Fun all day
They played croquet and bean bag toss, jumped on the trampoline, swung on the hammock and swings, and took part in a nature hunt with a list of goodies to collect which they had to bring back to camp and were awarded excursion badges for.
But the highlight of the day was the sheer determination and commitment of the boys to catch trout. Five trout were caught, photographed and released back into the dam. Such excitement … and a great “the-one-that-got-away” story for the boys to tell their friends.
Tasty lamb rolls, roasting marshmallows over the fire in the firepit, and s’mores – the perfect end to Benjamin’s birthday treat.
