In association with Concerts SA, renowned guitar virtuoso Guy Buttery returns to KZN with a brand new show. For the very first time in KZN, Guy will be bringing his Standard Bank Ovation Award winning collaboration with drummer/percussionist extraordinaire Gareth Gale with concerts in Durban, Kloof and Salt Rock.
At the age of 30, Guy has achieved what most musicians accomplish in a lifetime. With sell-out performances in the US, the UK, Australia, Brazil, France, Italy and all over Southern Africa, Guy Buttery is Africa’s biggest acoustic music export. Described as a “National treasure” by the Mercury, Guy has two South African Music Awards (SAMA’s) under his belt and four Standard Bank Ovation Awards. Buttery has performed his works with KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and an endless list of several of South Africa’s greats. His recent tour of SA was voted “Top Live Show of the Year” by The Cape Times.
Gareth Gale’s extraordinary work as one of SA’s leading percussionists has taken him to premier arts destinations around the world. From the House of Blues in Los Angeles and the Living Room in New York, to the famed Troubadour in London and Le Zebra in Paris to name a few. He has supported artists such as Snoop Dogg, Pharrell, Donovan Frankenreiter and Seether. In 2010, Gareth played at the Rio Loco Festival in France alongside many South African legends such as Hugh Masekela, Johnny Clegg and Freshlyground. He draws inspiration from the African and Indian rhythms that radiate out of his home city, Durban, and is conscious of reflecting these whenever he plays.
This electrifying duo have toured France and the US together, but have seldom appeared in concert in South Africa. After receiving yet another Standard Bank Ovation Award for “Best Live Performance” at last year’s National Arts Festival, Guy and Gareth have continued to push the envelope of what a simple duo are capable of. Expect high dynamics, deep grooves, delicate African inflections and mind-bending guitar/drum chemistry of a new order.
