Well, the sun is out, the sky is blue….and if you don’t make it up to Mozambique this long weekend then at least get as far as the Prawn Shack at Amitikulu. This is one destination which is worth the drive and it has had a facelift that has taken away none of its rustic charm, but has made it into a more comfortable and relaxing place to eat.
If you don’t know the place it is set amongst the sand dunes, off the drag, and you arrive to the sound of reggae around eleven in the morning. When you leave is up to you, but after welcome Caipirinhi cocktails, then a couple of buckets of beers, caprese salad, prawn bisque, prawn bunnies, dipping prawns, linefish, shisanyama with steam bread and mfino, Zulu sushi with wasabi butter, and finally a baked Camenbert with brown sugar, and possibly Tequila shots with live shrimps swimming around in them, it may be late.
This is stay the night or designate a driver territory. The day passes in a mellow, fuzzy round the edges kind of way, and the wooden swings by the bar sway in the breeze, the music plays, everyone wanders to the beach for a swim, you eat some more. This may be a British idea of what life should be like in Africa, and I make no apologies for that, but whenever I feel like taking a time out, this works.
This day vacation will cost you R170 a head, and that will be the best money you spend this spring.
