One of our Durban Girls’ College’s, Kellyn Pincus, has initiated the Hidden Hunger Project.
The Grade 10 pupil’s intention behind this project is to raise awareness of, and funds for, the plight of children in South Africa who are unable to access the nutrients that their bodies require to grow and develop fully and properly.
Hidden Hunger’s main component incorporates Durban Girls’ College and a number of other independent schools across South Africa in a phantom dinner to be held across the country on the 14th of August.
Groups of people will be able to choose how they want to spend the evening, instead of attending an event. Dinner could be a party with friends, a braai or just a family eating a meal together. The purpose of the dinner is to raise awareness of people who are in a worse off situation than we are.
People will have dinner wherever they please on the 14th of August and are encouraged to post a picture of their dinner, between 19h19 and 20h20, on the 14th of August. With people potentially joining in from around the world participants will be sharing in a “global” dinner. An amount of R20 will be paid on a per head basis.
Because of the way in which technology is evolving, a QR codes is used as the main form of payment. Participants are encouraged to download the Zapper app from their App Store and scan the QR code, which is available on all of the Hidden Hunger posters, flyers and social media pages.
Kelly’s goal is for young people like herself to be driving the process that highlights this issue to the adult world. As young people with the knoweledge of what social media can do Kelly hopes this campaign will go and so my intention is viral and that she’ll be able to make a huge impact.
