High in the mountains

By The Crest Magazine01/06/20102 Mins Read

On a recent boys bonding trip with his brother to the Northern Berg, Garth Johnstone discovered the magnificent Mahai camp site in Royal Natal National Park

I’d been planning to spend a few days away with my brother for ages, and the Northern Berg seemed the perfect option, situated about half way between Durbs and Joburg where he, unfortunately, lives.

Having done the Tugela Gorge hike before, I was already well acquainted with the beauty of the place, but was nevertheless completely blown away by the Mahai camp site.

Here, for about R70 a day, you get beautifully manicured grounds, excellent facilities and ablutions, a pristine environment and one of the most stunning views in the area.

Then there are the many trails and activities on offer; these are some of the best hikes in the Berg, and it would be criminal to visit Mahai without getting your boots dirty.

Strange rock formations in the Tugela Gorge tunnel

Over a few days we did the Tugela Gorge hike up to the base of the Amphitheatre and a rather strenuous walk up the other way to Mahai Falls. For scenic splendour Mahai Falls really took the cake, and you also have the option of continuing along the route to Witsieshoek and the mountain resort at the top. Tugela Gorge features open sections of hiking, dark and mysterious woodlands (you keep expecting hobbits and sprites to appear as if by magic) and the strange and compelling tunnel section towards the end.

This is casual hiking, requiring just a basic level of fitness, so everyone can join in the fun.

Breathtaking views, clean air, close encounters with wildlife, what more could you want?

What you need: Good boots; trail food; water; cold weather clothes; a warm place to sleep. Always sign the mountain register.
