Krantzkloof Nature Reserve

Krantzkloof Nature Reserve is a haven for hiking enthusiasts, boasting over 30km of well-maintained trails ranging from easy to very tough. The most popular short hike is the Mpithi Trail – which takes about 1,5hrs and includes the Mpithi Falls. Longer loops can take up to five or six hours and include steep descents and ascents into Kloof Gorge. The reserve has recorded 169 butterfly, 274 tree and 254 bird species. Maps are available at the main picnic sites Kloof Falls (152 Kloof Falls Road) and Nkutu (62 Valley Drive). Entry is R40 per adult and R20 for children under 12.

Giba Gorge

Giba is not only a mountain biker’s paradise, it also has lovely hiking trails that traverse the valley in both directions with many link-ups, allowing you to flow from one trail into another – creating a different hiking experience each time you hit the trails. All trails – apart from the Purple Route – offer a variety of technical aspects and you can expect rocks, roots, ups and downs. The Purple Route (4,6km) is perfect for kids and first timers, while the Green Route (10,7km) allows for easier climbs and longer descents. The Blue Route (16,3km) is the longest trail with the steepest climbs, and is a really good training loop. There are also two

hikes to view points, one to the magnificent MacIntosh Falls and another to The Peak.

Enjoy beautiful trees, birds, fauna and flora, and if you’re lucky a caracal or bush buck might just cross your path.

Springside

Springside Nature Reserve is ideal for all ages and fitness levels. Guided walks take place once a month, but you can also do a self-guided walk or simply relax at the shady picnic site. Observe and enjoy the different ecosystems – river, wetlands, riverine forest and grasslands – and don’t forget to look and listen out for birds. Of interest is the Analematic Clock, a large horizontal sundial. To read the time on a sunny day, stand on the month and your shadow will point to the hour number on the back wall. There’s no entrance charge but donations are welcome for on-going conservation.
