Imbizo Gallery

By The Crest Magazine29/12/20153 Mins Read
Marke Meyer - Wayward Dreams of the Outside World

“Wayward Dreams” is the title of the art exhibition which will be opening at Imbizo Gallery in Ballito in early January 2016. This exhibition of seven top South African artists promises to both soothe the soul and challenge your sense of wit. On the menu are 4 sculptors, 2 painters and a wood-cut artist.

Isabel Roos, curator and owner of Imbizo Gallery explains why sculpture holds such a prestigious place in her heart and gallery: “I have always loved sculpture but find lately that there has been a wonderful renewed interest in this art form from my clients. Because contemporary homes are now very often ‘open plan’ with large windows and double volume areas – the actual wall space is limited. Sculpture is the perfect art solution for these areas.”

The sculptors that Isabel has included in this exhibition include:
– Marke Meyer “his bronze works have a wonderful poetic quality and contain an incredible lightness about them both literally and figuratively,” Isabel explains, “especially in his suspended pieces”.
– Carl Roberts “Carl creates extraordinary works from found natural materials: wood, stone, coral etc. The material dictates to him what really lies within the piece.”
– Elizabeth Balcom “Elizabeth focuses on the feminine, using the language of the Renaissance to explore and expose aspects of human nature. Her works demand a response.”
– Gerhard van Eck: “Gerhard’s pieces are created in interesting mediums including concrete and acrylic resin. His pieces have become known for their ability to capture inherent emotion and energy.”

“There are two bold, talented and fearless women painters included in this exhibition,” Isabel continues, “and they are Terri Broll and Hannetjie de Clercq.”

Terri holds a Masters Degree in Fine Art and a Masters Degree in Clinical Psychology. Her preferred medium is oil and wax, the wax giving the work an ambiguous texture that suggests images that are both disturbing and humorous.
Hannetjie’s pieces show a juxtaposition of emotions – sometimes light-hearted and yet often tinged with a sense of sadness. Her fascination for the purity of medieval iconography interconnected with modern technology is evident throughout her work.”

Isaac Sithole makes up the seventh wonder in this exhibition. Isaac, now past away, leaves an incredible collection of glowing woodcuts. A self confessed artist from the age of 12, Isaac’s pieces have been selling quickly as they were made in small editions. His glowing colour combinations depict simple, humorous and ordinary village life.

The living artists will be in attendance at the opening on Thursday the 7th of January and will be happy to chat about their techniques, inspirations and lives. Effervescent actress and storyteller Barbie Meyer will open the exhibition.

All are welcome to join them for a glass of wine and some nibbles at 6.30p.m. at Imbizo Gallery at the Lifestyle Centre in Ballito.
