It all seemed to start with a dramatic loss of form for the England and Manchester United star. Then it seemed that Wayne Rooney’s life was falling apart after dramatic revelations of a sordid affair . . . but now many football fans are wondering, was it all about the cash?

Wayne Rooney’s fall from grace at England’s most famous football club Manchester United was thought to be as a result of his sexual relations with high class call girl Jennifer Thompson, and the resultant fallout with his wife and childhood sweetheart Coleen.
But then came Rooney’s threats to leave the club and United boss Alex Ferguson claiming that it was all over and Rooney planned to move on. Was it because he didn’t believe in the future prospects of the club, or were his marital problems making it impossible to focus on a future in Manchester? Or did he have a problem with Ferguson?
And all the time the fans sweated and cursed the football gods.
But in a dramatic U-turn, Rooney announced on Friday that he had committed to a 5-year deal at the club . . . his wages an astronomic 250 000 pounds a week. This translates to R2.8 million a week. Can you imagine trying to spend that kind of money? And then there are the endorsements, probably worth just as much.
So what was it all about then? . . . was “the gaffer”, Ferguson, an unbearable dictator? Was Coleen saying she wanted him out of the United set-up? Did Rooney think United were washed up? Or, as it now seems, was it all about the money . . . and squeezing every available drop out of the club?
One thing’s for certain: United fans are going to take a lot of convincing. Rooney scarves have just returned to full price at the United merchandise shop, but no one’s buying yet. It’s time the real Wayne Rooney stood up and took to the field of play.
