A seaside town in Southern Italy is considering a ban on women wearing miniskirts and other revealing outfits.
The ban, which has been proposed by Castellammare di Stabia’s mayor, would also cover outfits that show too much cleavage and low-rise jeans.
Mayor Luigi Bobbio says the restrictions would “restore urban decorum and facilitate better civil co-existence” in the town near Naples. Included in his controversial plans are are bans on sunbathing, blasphemous language and playing soccer in the town’s public parks.
Nothing too revealing
“Nothing too revealing” is the new policy Bobbio wants to enforce, according to the BBC’s Duncan Kennedy. That means a tough new dress code which would effectively outlaw everything from miniskirts to low-cut jeans when people walk around the town.
He has asked the local council to approve a measure that includes fines of around $35 to $696 for offenders.
The mayor’s initiative is being backed by the local parish priest. ”I think it’s the right decision,” Don Paolo Cecere tells the Cronache di Napoli newspaper. ”It’s also a way of combating the rise in sexual harassment.”
