Hillcrest Corner Celebrated the JD Rally’s 100th Anniversary in true Vintage Style!
On the 9th of March 2013 Hillcrest Corner hosted the annual JD Rally pit stop, where 200 bikers hit the road to travel 650 kilometres from Johannesburg to Durban on their vintage motorcycles – a record number of entries for the rally, and the largest entry for any
single motor sport event in South Africa.
Only motorcycles that were made before 1937 were allowed to compete, in memory of the lastofficial road race that was held in 1936, before public road racing was illegalised. The oldest motorcycle entered for this year’s rally was a 1908 Triumph, which made it 105 years old when it started the long journey to Durban.
This year, however, was a special one. It was the rally’s 100th anniversary, and the centenary event started from Johannesburg and ended in Durban over three days. The competitive section ended in Hillcrest.
Bikers arrived at the Centre from 10:30am, and there was lots of support from the Hillcrest public as the bikers hit the tarmac. An abundance of vintage bikes and old-school cars such Rolls Royce’s and Morgan’s arrived with the rally, adding evenmore to the atmosphere.
The 2013 JD Rally, which has international status, was held under the auspices ofthe Southern African Veteran and Vintage Association (SAVVA) and promoted by the Vintage and Veteran Club (VVC).
