The weekend of 21 and 22 July sees the long-awaited finals of the SPAR KZN Shield Teens U18 Hockey Tournament taking place at St Mary’s DSG and Thomas More College, where ten girls teams from around KZN will do battle for the title.
This is the second year that the tournament is being held, with the teams all having qualified from 80 schools who competed in the regional play-offs at the beginning of the year.
The finals will be divided into two pools with five teams in each pool. Games on Saturday will be split between both St Mary’s DSG and Thomas More College and Sunday’s games being played at St Mary’s DSG.
An exhibition match at lunchtime on Saturday will display some awe-inspiring moves as the Kearsney first team will take on the KZN Raiders.
Making their second appearance in the finals are Ferrum High School, Durban Girls’ College, St Mary’s DSG, and runner up in the 2011 tournament, Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High. Joining them are six newcomers – Ladysmith High School, Creston College, The Wykeham Collegiate, Durban Girls’ High School, Danville Girls’ High and Empangeni High School.
The SPAR KZN Shield Teens U18 Hockey Tournament recognises the talents of the unsung heroes, the umpires. Ten bravehearts from around the province will be carefully watching proceedings.
They are: Northern KZN – Johan Jacobs from Ferrum; PMB North – Nikita Cryer from Wickham; PMB Central – Annemarie Maarteens from PMB Girls’ High; Greytown – Sara-Lyn Wheeler from Greytown; North Coast – Berto Basson from Felixton; DBN North – Warrick Reed from Ashton; PMB Central – Richard Pentecost from Durban Girls’ College; DBN South – Sonika Visser from Werda; Kloof/Pinetowh – David Keedle from and Southern KZN – Tessa Van Vuuren from St Patricks.
