According to the eThekwini Municipality, the construction of a new lifeguard tower at Umhlanga Main Beach is on track, despite delays in construction.
Two delays have been experienced: the first as a result of a month-long steel strike in July and the second as a result of complications in the formwork manufacturing. This formwork delay was due to the complicated nature of the new concrete tower structure, and the fact that the formwork company had to send the project up to Johannesburg for specialist design and manufacturing.
The eThekwini Municipality has been liaising closely with the contractor, who is fully aware of Umhlanga Main Beach being a prime holiday destination and is committed to completing the tower as quickly as possible. According to the Municipality, all major construction is due to finish before the festive season.
