SA consumers seem to have been programmed into believing that the best olive oil comes from Europe. But in actual fact there are 74 registered olive oil producers in South Africa – with some of their olive oils being amongst the best in the world, winning several international awards. Yet while we are starting to see more locally produced oils on the shelves, most are imports from Europe.
Without legislation, we can’t be certain we’re buying the real deal – that is pure cold extracted extra virgin olive oil with all its wonderful health benefits. (It’s not called liquid gold for nothing).
One way to make sure is to look out for the SA Olive “commitment to quality” sticker on the bottle, that guarantees that what’s on the label is actually in the bottle – in other words the real deal.
There are at least 20 different cultivars grown in South Africa (most of the producers are situated in the Western Cape).
Depending on the cultivar and when the olives were harvested the taste ranges from delicate to intensely fruity. It should always taste fresh, never “greasy” and the smell should be reminiscent of freshly cut grass.
You should find locally produced (albeit rather limited) at some branches of Pick n Pay, Spar, Woolworths and Food Lover’s Markets. Also try delis and farmers’ markets. Some olive farmers sell their produce online.
Note: As the 2103 olive harvest is only taking place now, stickers dated 2012 are the freshest.
