Well, any week with the Oyster Box in it is a good week as far as I am concerned, and this week had lots of Oyster Box in it. On Tuesday Wayne Coetzer, the most delightful and professional hotel manager I know, held a lunch in the downstairs cellar restaurant.
It is so beautifully designed….the glass ceiling is the floor of the Oyster Bar above, which gives it a light, cool feel unlike any cellar I have ever eaten in. The food is out of this world…the salmon and langoustine main course was a triumph by chef Kevin Joseph and the dessert…a trio of chocolate, has been haunting me all week. Delicious. The company was fabulous, the sun shone, and we laughed the afternoon away.
On Wednesday evening Madame Zingara beckoned on a windy night down at Suncoast. If you know the concept you will be delighted to discover that the new show is more spectacular than ever. The contortionists and the chair balancers, the singers and the tent, are all out of this world. We were three feet from the stage and the spectaular nature of some of the feats were even more extraordinary from that distance. We danced, we clapped, we gasped. This is fast becoming a Durban institution, enjoy!
Last night and back to the Oyster Box. I went to watch Ben Voss, aka Beauty Ramapelepele, and eat the Oyster Box curry buffet. What a treat on both counts. This was an inspired combination upstairs in the Pearl Room, and the show was hilarious. Beauty ripped apart South African society from the perspective of a rich, pampered, somewhat corrupt African woman, no race in South Africa escaped her wicked tongue, and when she pulled a white guy out of the audience to show him how to dance like an African, the place erupted. What a lovely week…..
