At 70 years old, Mrs W.F. Kirk emigrated from England to South Africa to join her family living at Botha’s Hill.
Win, as she was fondly known, soon integrated into South African life, joining the Women’s Institute (WI) and serving as a president of the Hillcrest Chapter.
Win also learned how to play bridge and was well-known in Hillcrest bridge circles. She lived in Hillcrest until she was 90 and then returned to England for medical reasons.
Win was a character and loved to entertain, making her a much-loved resident of Botha’s Hill.
She also loved to cook, with cooking having been a large part of her life prior to immigrating to South Africa. She had run three very successful businesses (Kelly’s Kitchen, The Vine Hotel and Trafalgar Inn) in England before her move.
Born on September 20th 1913, Win turned 100 years old on that same date this year. Her son and daughter-in-law flew over to England for the celebration.
