As one of a handful of town planning lawyers in KwaZulu-Natal, Richard Evans’ expertise is in high demand. “South Africa has a highly sophisticated system of development laws, which are difficult to navigate if you aren’t up to date,” he explains.
Since joining the profession at the young age of 23, Richard practiced in a large Durban-based law firm, becoming the Senior Partner, but left the rat race in 2006 to realise his vision of a boutique property law firm in the Kloof area, with a professional but tranquil approach to the law. “We enjoy our work and take people’s problems seriously.”
Richard’s other areas of interest include environmental and municipal law, building plan issues and neighbour disputes. The team is also experienced in promoting developments or objecting to them, and arguing on their clients’ behalf at hearings. They also represent their clients in municipal rates disputes.

In 2011, attorney, notary and conveyancer Jennifer Afton Sharp joined Richard, broadening the firm’s range of services and providing clients (new and existing) with a “one-stop shop” for property law, with Jennifer establishing the firm’s rapidly-growing conveyancing practice in conjunction with her Senior Paralegal, Michelle du Toit.
Jennifer, who is now in partnership with Richard, has expertise beyond property transfers, including subdivisions, consolidations, removal of title deed restrictions, sectional title issues and antenuptial contracts. “Property law evolves quickly,” she says. “For example, the Sectional Titles Act has recently been amended, making it vital for the necessary adjustments to be made. We are able to guide our clients through that.”
“Buying and selling property should never be done casually,” Richard continues. “A standard contract doesn’t work for everyone and it is imperative that you have your attorney look over any legal document before putting pen to paper.”
