Manning Road sinkhole

By The Ridge Magazine03/02/20112 Mins Read

February 3, 2011. Update to the story below. The sinkhole that stopped traffic in Glenwood’s Manning Road has been repaired and service continues as per normal.

If you go down to the Berea today, you could be in for a big surprise. It made most of Durban’s newspapers yesterday (Wednesday) and late in the day Glenwood residents were still lining up in Manning Road (near the corner of Clark Road) to snap pictures of the traffic stopping sinkhole workers are currently trying to repair there.

The sinkhole that is metres wide and stretches right across the road has a pool of foul looking liquid at the bottom. One resident I spoke to said there were some interesting odours coming from the scene.

What started as a small indentation slowly developed into something more serious and people who regularly use the route said it was only a matter of time before serious damage was done to the road.

Workers have now repaired the sinkhole that saw a section of Manning Road cordoned off to traffic for days.

While workers were still on the scene after 5pm yesterday, it seems there’s still loads of work to be done before the road can be made passable.

Note to drivers: You can’t pass through Manning Road between Moore (Che Guevara) and Clark. Don’t even try. Find an alternative route.
