Ms Arti Jadoo, Acting Principal at Gillitts Primary School, is the May recipient of the Highway Hero Award and graciously received it from Councillor Rick Crouch earlier this week.
Arti Jadoo is well known in the community for her involvement in local affairs.
Ms Jadoo was a teacher at Gillitts Primary School before being appointed as acting principal. During her tenor as acting principal, the school has made a 180-degree turn around. The children are happy, facilities have been upgraded and playground equipment has been installed – all thanks to the persistence of Ms Jadoo and donations from the community.
Ms Jadoo has recently taken on the additional responsibility of being the War on Poverty convenor for Ward 10. This is a program that assembles representatives from all government departments on one committee to assist the community with their issues.
“Arti Jadoo has shown she cares for the community and goes out of her way to contribute and make it a better place for those that live in the surrounding area. We are very lucky to have a committed person like her and I hope that the decision is made to make her the permanent principal of Gillitts Primary School and that it is done sooner than later. She is well deserving of the award,” said Councillor Rick Crouch.
ABOUT THE HIGHWAY HERO AWARD
The award will be presented once a month to a resident, business owner or municipal employee in the Ward 10 area who goes the extra mile for the community. Coucillor Crouch says he initiated the project “because there are so many people who selflessly give their time and resources to the community. These people are seldom thanked for this task and whilst it is but a small gesture to recognise and acknowledge what these people do, it will hopefully encourage others to do the same”.
Councillor Crouch encourages residents to take ownership of their community and says these tasks do not have to be major exercises, simply keeping the verges in the street on which you live neat when the municipality has not been around for a while, picking up the litter on the route you walk your dog daily.
