Marge Mitchell of Keep Hillcrest Beautiful Association (KHBA) is the February recipient of the Highway Hero Award and graciously received it from Councillor Rick Crouch.
Marge has been the driving force behind KHBA for a number of years. She recently stood down as chairperson and now occupies the position of secretary. Anyone driving down Old Main Rd in Hillcrest would have noticed the KHBA workers diligently working on the verges, without them I do not know what the verges would look like.
KHBA is a non-profit organisation that was formed as a result of a letter to the local Highway Mail asking for interested persons, who were keen on retaining the beauty of Hillcrest, to make contact. Five persons answered the appeal, and they formed the core committee, all apart from one, who left due to time constraints, are still on the committee.
This is a very deserving association that operates on donations, all the members are volunteers and give of their time willingly. So, if you are looking for an association to donate your hard-earned money to, think of them.

Nominate your own Highway Hero
The “Highway Hero” award will be presented once a month to a resident in the Ward 10 area who goes the extra mile for the community. Councillor Crouch initiated the project “because there are so many people who selflessly give their time and resources to the community. These people are seldom thanked for this task and whilst it is but a small gesture to recognise and acknowledge what these people do, it will hopefully encourage others to do the same.”
Councillor Rick Crouch encourages residents to take ownership of their community and says these tasks do not have to be major exercises – simply keeping the verges in the street on which you live neat when the municipality has not been around for a while, picking up the litter on the route you walk your dog daily.
