I was too young to remember the opening of the Beverly Hills hotel in 1964, which at the time was KwaZulu-Natal’s first five-star graded hotel. Fifty years on and this landmark of the uMhlanga coastline has one of the finest names in the hospitality industry – unsurpassed anywhere in the world.
From the moment you walk through the doors of this grand hotel, you’re met with stylish elegance. A few sips of the welcome champagne and I could already feel myself unwind as staff made checking in a painless process.
All suites are sea facing with panoramic views that go on forever, and tastefully decorated with flair and finesse. We were lucky enough to stay in a deluxe suite with a private outdoor shower and sun lounge area. Best of all, we could see the dolphins swimming by in the morning … without getting out of bed! For those wanting to stay in touch, high speed Wi-Fi is available, and if you’re a movie lover, there’s a vast library of movies on offer plus the usual bar fridge packed with goodies.
We enjoyed pre-dinner cocktails in the softly-lit lounge filled with comfy lounge suites and high wingback chairs before dining at The Sugar Club.
Dinner was exceptional – the Beef Fillet and Venison were tender, melting in our mouths like butter, and even though the portions were generous, we managed to find room for dessert, Dark Chocolate Sphere – absolutely amazing, a winner!
A table laden with every breakfast option you could image met us the next morning. Eating breakfast on the terrace while taking in the splendour of the Beverly Hills swimming pool (which looks as perfect as a picture) and scintillating views is by far the most delightful way to start the day.
All too quickly our “break” was over. But if you want to kick back, relax, be waited on hand and foot by smiling staff, then treat yourself to the best weekend break ever. Happy 50th anniversary, Beverly Hills! *
