Orchid enthusiasts – make a note in your April diaries. The Natal Orchid Society’s annual Autumn Orchid Show takes place on Saturday 22nd April and Sunday 23rd April at the Parkhill Bowling Club on Umhlanga Rocks Drive in Durban.
A vast range of stunning orchids and other plants will be in the spotlight for all to enjoy. Plants which are in flower at this time of year include miltonias, phragmipediums, dendrobiums and vandas.
“We are inviting all orchid lovers and keen gardeners to visit the show where these plants, plus many more, will be on display,” says Melanie van Greunen, vice-president of the Natal Orchid Society.
Apart from the orchid show, there will be a wide variety of orchid plants on sale for those who would like to start – or add to – their own collection. Potting demonstrations will also be held on both days and experts will be in attendance to share their knowledge on this beautiful plant. A number of orchid plants will also be raffled off as prizes.
The show will be held from 10am – 4pm on Saturday and from 9am – 3pm on Sunday. Light lunches and refreshments will be sold in the tea garden. Entrance fee is R15 for adults. Admission is free for children under 12.
*Existing orchid-growers – and anyone interested in owning and nurturing these beautiful plants – are invited to attend the monthly meetings of the Natal Orchid Society. These are held on the second Monday of every month at 7pm at the Parkhill Bowling Club, Umhlanga Rocks Drive (entrance in Sterling Crescent), Durban North.
