The man known only as Cliff or PigSpotter has raised the ire of officials for his controversial tweets on Twitter which alert the motoring public to the movements of traffic officials.
PigSpotter currently has more than 11 200 followers and tweets and messages of support for his posts are coming in fast and furious.
Metro Police spokesman Wayne Minaar told TimesLive that PigSpotter will soon have to face the “might of the law. What he has done is defeating the ends of justice.”
Yesterday PigSpotter said on radio that he would no longer reveal details about roadblocks, but about “cops who hide with cameras”.
With his rapidly expanding online following, PigSpotter could diversify into more mainstream means of disseminating information about traffic related news, and has already suggested the possibility of a weekly radio spot.
Some of the comments going about include: “How to build followers, step 1 put government in their place, step 2 get into trouble from gov. Step 3 get onto T.V.”
“I think you should start a national party and run for president, u just broke the 9000 mark :-”
“Dear South African Regime… Arrest bribe-taking Metro cops instead of harassing @PigSpotter.”
Metro cops around the country must be watching with interest calls from followers in Durban, Cape Town and other centres for PigSpotter to branch out and provide coverage in South Africa’s other major cities.
PigSpotter says he started tweeting because he feels certain traffic policemen are abusing the system, and that corrupt cops are victimising motorists. He’s been lauded by his fans and warned by others of the consequences of his actions if he does not abide by the law.
