When Upper Highway’s Sue Barnes realised the lack of access to feminine hygiene products among rural young girls and how it affected their attendance at school, she had to do something to help. “I have two dyslexic daughters and the impact on them having to miss a week of school a month would have been disastrous,” she says.
Sue developed Subz Pants and Pads, a reusable, eco-friendly sanitary pad that clips on to a 100% cotton panty and lasts three to five years.
Established in 2010, Subz has grown in leaps and bounds. Project Dignity, the non-profit extension of the organisation, distributes sponsored Subz packs to girls in schools and communities across the country – to this day over 130 000 packs have been handed out.
“We would love to supply all 4 000 000 rural girls in South Africa with Subz packs to keep them in school and give them the education they deserve with dignity,” says Sue.
