The SPCA is urging everyone to take the necessary precautions to protect your pets from the fear and suffering caused by fireworks.
Although there are laws regarding where and when fireworks may be sold and discharged, these laws are frequently broken.
The SPCA movement in South Africa has again called for a complete ban on all ‘big bang’ fireworks which annually cause hundreds of terrified dogs and cats to become lost or killed as they try to escape the noise.
Dogs can hear five times more acutely than humans; and cats about twice as acutely as dogs. In practical terms, that means your dog can hear a whisper from almost three times as far away as you can and cats are even more sensitive.
This explains why your pets get so frightened by the sound of fireworks.
In order to protect your pets and help reduce their stress, follow these useful tips:
- Ensure your pets have identification – microchips or collar tags
- If possible, stay home when you suspect fireworks will be set off
- If you can’t be home with your pets, keep them inside, draw the curtain and play calming music
- Put their toys or blankets near and give them a bone to chew or a catnip toy for cats
- If your pets react very badly, consult your vet who may prescribe a tranquiliser
