Queens for a day

Helping little girls feel like beauty queens at The Waterberry in Ballito

Former Miss South Africa, the stunning Megan Coleman, was incredibly moved when she appeared on 31 August at The Waterberry in Ballito to help little girls become beauty queens for a day.

By Danielle Sheedy

Queen For a Day is a project run by Reach For a Dream, an organisaton which fulfils the dreams of children between the ages of 3 and 18, who have been diagnosed with having a life threatening illness by a medical practioner.

Every little girl dreams of becoming a queen, so this project was started to give them that chance outside of the hospital environment. Various themes are chosen and the girls are taken to venues such as a dance studio, hotels, modelling studios and game lodges for their exciting day.

Each girl is made to feel beautiful and special, to ease the effect of their illnesses on their body and, more importantly, their self esteem.

The girls, aged between 3 and 7, received uninterrupted pampering, having their nails and faces done up. They were then dressed in beautiful dresses and received wands and wings, before each girl had a turn to walk down the red carpet, where Megan Coleman presented them with a crown and a sash.

After posing for a photograph like a true beauty queen, they were treated to a delicious high tea picnic.

“Today I forgot that my child is sick,” said one of the thrilled mothers who joined in on the day’s activities.
