The non-stop rainfall of the past few days has helped fill KZN’s dams, reports East Coast Radio.
Umgeni Water spokesperson Shami Harichunder says four of their dams are filled to capacity with some overflowing. As a result, he says, they will have enough water to supply the province’s major municipalities until next year’s dry season.
The water utility services six municipalities, including eThekwini. Hazelmere Dam near Durban is one of the dams benefiting from the rain.
Harichunder says they have recorded over 150 millimetres of rainfall at all their dams, which is an improvement from the previous year. There will be no restrictions on water usage in the near future.
“What this means, in effect, is that the rivers have been flowing exceptionally well into the dams. However, the prediction for the next three to four months is that the total average rainfall would be a low average. However, that is not alarming because there is an adequate amount of water available in storage dams to ensure that municipalities have a good supply of water available to them,” he said.
